DevOps Cloud Engineer
We are seeking a DevOps Cloud Engineer to help design, deploy, and maintain our multi-cloud, high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure. This role will collaborate closely with our managed service partner and our in-house scientific and engineering teams to establish and manage our cloud-based compute environment. Over time, this engineer will assume full ownership of our cloud operations, automation pipelines, and HPC cluster management.
Realta Fusion is a rapidly growing start-up developing compact magnetic mirror fusion energy systems to address the biggest challenge of our time – tackling global climate change while ensuring a sufficient energy supply for at least ten billion people on (and off) earth. Realta is targeting the need to decarbonize industrial process heat as the fastest path to full-scale deployment of our technology. We are building a team with diverse talents dedicated to making fusion energy a real solution to humanity’s most pressing problem.
Position Responsibilities:
Cloud Infrastructure Development
- Work alongside our managed service provider to deploy and configure Realta Fusion’s HPC cluster in modern cloud compute environments using scalable virtual networks, compute instances, and object-storage services.
- Support and manage secure cloud compute infrastructure for export-controlled projects, ensuring compliance and data protection.
- Automate provisioning and scaling of HPC resources using Infrastructure-as-Code tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, etc.).
System Administration & Operations
- Manage and monitor performance of compute clusters, virtual machines, and storage solutions.
- Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines to support simulation software builds and deployments.
- Implement identity management, security controls, and role-based access across cloud environments.
Software Environment Management
- Install, configure and maintain key simulation software such as SolidWorks, ANSYS, OpenMC, and related dependencies.
- Collaborate with scientists and engineers to optimize workloads for cloud-based HPC environments.
Automation & Monitoring
- Build observability tools for resource usage, cost management, and job scheduling.
- Integrate with container orchestration platforms (e.g., Kubernetes, AWS Batch, Slurm) for simulation jobs.
Compliance & Governance
- Work with Business Ops Manager and Engineering teams to maintain export control boundaries.
- Document infrastructure designs, network architecture, and operational procedures.
Qualifications
Required:
- 5+ years of experience in DevOps, Cloud Infrastructure, or Systems Engineering roles.
- Proven experience managing cloud-based compute environments using VPCs, EC2-like compute instances, S3-style object storage, and container orchestration platforms
- Proficiency in scripting and automation (C/C++, Python, Bash, PowerShell, PHP/SQL).
- Experience in managing JupyterHub or similar multi-user environments.
- Knowledge of HPC systems, parallel computing, and simulation software environments.
- Familiarity deploying and managing workloads across large-scale cloud environments with capabilities such as virtual networking, resource grouping, object/blob storage, and identity management services.
- Exposure to IaC tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation.
- Understanding of networking, VPNs, and secure data exchange between cloud and on-prem environments.
Preferred
- Experience working with export-controlled or regulated data environments.
- Familiarity with CAD/CAE software support (SolidWorks, ANSYS).
- Knowledge of container orchestration, CI/CD, and HPC schedulers (Slurm, PBS, etc.).
Compensation & Benefits
What we are working on is hard… and hugely important. Realta Fusion is assembling a talented team bound together by a passion to solve humanity’s biggest challenge with first-of-a-kind technology. Additionally, Realta offers:
- Competitive compensation package, including equity stock options.
- Comprehensive benefits including health, dental, and vision insurance, plus a retirement savings plan.
- Flexible paid time off (PTO) to support work-life balance.
- Work and live in Madison, Wisconsin — one of America’s most livable and vibrant cities.
