Summer Fusion Internship
We’re looking for bright, curious problem-solvers ready to help shape the future of fusion energy!
Summer Interns at Realta Fusion will contribute to one of several exciting areas of work:
- Science/NBI Research
- Experimental Physics
- Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
Science/NBI Research Interns
- Assist with the construction, installation, and operation of Realta Fusion projects supporting the Wisconsin High-temperature superconducting Axisymmetric Mirror (WHAM) experiment.
- Gain hands-on experience working safely with high-vacuum systems, pulsed power hardware, control system software, and high-temperature superconducting magnets.
- Support experimental research activities and gain exposure to fusion-specific plasma diagnostics and laboratory operations.
Experimental Physics Interns
- Support experimental physics research by assisting with the setup, operation, and testing of equipment used in fusion energy experiments.
- Work alongside scientists and engineers to collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data to better understand plasma behavior and performance.
- Gain hands-on experience with plasma diagnostics, laboratory instrumentation, and experimental procedures while contributing to ongoing research projects.
Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning Interns
- Apply artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to help solve research and engineering challenges related to fusion energy.
- Support data analysis, predictive modeling, and the development and evaluation of computational tools using scientific and experimental datasets.
- Collaborate with scientists and engineers to explore practical applications of AI and machine learning, with projects tailored to the intern's skills and interests.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to work on-site, in-person at either the Realta Fusion office (Madison, WI) or the Physical Sciences Laboratory (near Stoughton, WI).
- Authorized to work in the United States.
- Approximately two years away from entering the workforce (e.g., rising junior or equivalent academic standing).
- Demonstrated strong work habits and a commitment to safety.
Internship Timeframe
- Summer 2027 internship at the Physical Sciences Laboratory and Realta Fusion Madison office between May and August 2027 (start/end dates are flexible). On-site work is required.
- Full-time (40 hours/week) internship.
- If the internship is successful and scheduling allows, there may be an opportunity to continue part-time during the academic year.
