Co-ops at Realta Fusion will provide hands-on support (part-time or full-time, depending on location) to one of several exciting areas of engineering and design work:

• Mechanical Design & Fabrication
• Hardware Assembly, Integration & Test
• Electrical Engineering & Diagnostics

Mechanical Design & Fabrication Co-ops

• Support mechanical design of fusion hardware components using CAD (SolidWorks or similar), from concept sketches through detailed drawings
• Assist with drafting specifications and coordinating with machine shops and vendors on prototype fabrication
• Contribute to design reviews and iterate on designs based on fabrication, prototyping, and test feedback

Hardware Assembly, Integration & Test Co-ops

• Assist with the assembly, integration, and testing of vacuum systems, magnet systems, and mechanical structures supporting Realta’s fusion devices
• Support hands-on build activities in the lab and machine shop, including fixturing, alignment, and instrumentation setup
• Gain experience working safely with high vacuum systems, precision hardware, and lab equipment

Electrical Engineering & Diagnostics Co-ops

• Support the design, fabrication, and testing of diagnostic and instrumentation hardware for Realta’s fusion devices, including sensors, signal conditioning, and data acquisition electronics
• Assist with electrical design and integration of power systems, control circuitry, and cabling supporting magnets, vacuum systems, and pulsed power hardware
• Support bring-up, calibration, and troubleshooting of diagnostic and electrical systems in the lab, working closely with mechanical and controls engineers

Minimum Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Ability to work on-site at either the Realta Fusion office (Madison, WI) or the Physical Sciences Laboratory (near Stoughton, WI) – whether commuting locally for a part-time co-op or relocating for a full-time co-op.
• Authorized to work in the United States.
• A passion for hands-on design, fabrication, and building things; prior project, competition (e.g., Formula SAE, rocketry, robotics), or shop experience is a plus.
• Demonstrated strong work habits and a commitment to safety.

Co-op Program Timeframe

Realta Fusion offers two co-op formats, depending on your ability to commute to the Madison office:

Part-Time Co-op (Local Students Only)

• Up to 20 hours/week, with flexible scheduling to accommodate class schedules during the academic year.
• Available only to students who can commute to the Realta Fusion Madison office and/or the Physical Sciences Laboratory (near Stoughton, WI) without relocating.
• Co-ops may continue across multiple semesters, with the opportunity to transition into a summer internship or full-time role if mutual fit continues.

Full-Time Co-op (Non-Local Students)

• Full-time (40 hours/week), on-site at the Realta Fusion Madison office and/or the Physical Sciences Laboratory (near Stoughton, WI) for a full academic semester.
• Intended for students who are not local to Madison and need to relocate for the duration of the co-op.
• Typically runs for one academic semester (fall or spring), with the possibility of returning for additional semesters or transitioning into a summer internship or full-time role.
