Neutral Beam Injector Scientist

Madison, WI

Help power the future of fusion by advancing the science behind high-performance neutral beam injection. The Neutral Beam Injector Scientist will work with Realta’s engineering and scientific teams to map and deliver Realta’s technology development roadmap. The Neutral Beam Injector Scientist will support the operation of NBI systems on the Wisconsin High temperature superconducting Axisymmetric Mirror (WHAM) device, support the specification and procurement of NBI systems for Realta’s prototype device, Anvil, and support the design and development of steady state NBI systems for Realta’s fusion pilot plant, Hammir.

Realta Fusion is a rapidly growing start-up developing compact magnetic mirror fusion energy systems to address the biggest challenge of our time – tackling global climate change while ensuring a sufficient energy supply for at least ten billion people on (and off) earth. We are building a team with diverse talents dedicated to making fusion energy a real solution to humanity’s most pressing problem.

Responsibilities

  1. Scientific support in the design, development, and operation of Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) systems for use on Realta’s fusion devices.
  2. Conduct detailed simulations of ion source plasma dynamics, grid extraction physics, beam transport, and optics design
  3. Support neutral beam transport and heat deposition calculations.
  4. Support the commissioning and operation of NBI systems deployed in experimental devices, including WHAM, NBI test systems, and Anvil.
  5. Support integration of high-voltage power supplies, vacuum systems, and beam dumps.
  6. Develop diagnostics for the NBI plasma and beam, including secondary electron emission detectors, calorimeters, langmuir probes and optical diagnostics.
  7. Collaborate closely with external and internal cross-disciplinary teams including theory & modeling, experimental, engineering, and facilities to integrate NBI systems.
  8. Ensure that all reactor development activities are conducted in accordance with relevant safety standards and regulations. Conduct safety analyses and risk assessments related to reactor operation.
  9. Foster a positive and inclusive work environment that aligns with the company's mission, values, and sustainability goals.
